Walking in the Borders

The Roxburghe Golf Course

Discover a World of Peace and Leisure

For the golf enthusiast, the Borders offers no less than 19 courses with uncrowded fairways and green fees difficult to match anywhere. Melrose Golf Club itself, with an elevated position providing outstanding views over the "Scott" country, offers a fair challenge to the club golfer. For the more experienced golfer, the championship standard Roxburghe Golf Course, designed by the celebrated golf course architect Dave Thomas offers more of a challenge as well as breathtaking scenery.

No mention can be made of Melrose without the sport of rugby following closely behind. It was here that the game of 'Sevens' was invented, the first tournament having been played on 28th April, 1883. 'Sevens' tournaments are now held throughout the world and the Melrose annual event is one of the largest and most prestigious days in the rugby calendar.

The rich Borders' history as a frontier land fired the imagination of Sir Walter Scott nearly 200 years ago, and many local historic characters filled his books. Abbotsford, the home he built on the banks of the Tweed, near Melrose, has now itself taken a place in history, with the library and his collection of historic relics to be seen much as he left them. And that is only one of many country houses, castles and magnificent Adam mansions, each with classically styled parkland and estates which can now be enjoyed by everyone.

You'll find the central location of this picturesque town brings the best of the Borders within each reach - and there can be nowhere more welcoming to return to each day than Burts.
