Generally dry and crisp, drawing descriptions such as ‘grassy’, ‘herbaceous’, ‘gooseberry-like’, wines from the Sauvignon grape range from the wonderfully exaggerated and pronounced versions of New Zealand to the oak aged style of Californian Fumé Blanc, with Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé somewhere in between. These wines are suited to fish, shellfish and Poultry dishes.

CHARDONNAYS AND FULL-BODIED WHITES

It is no accident that Chardonnay appears in so many guises. It grows without much difficulty in many parts of the globe. The reason a great many varieties of wine result from it is that I depends on: How it grows (high or low yield), where it grows (ripe and melon-like or lean and hazelnut), how it is matured (oak or unoaked, ‘malolactic’ buttery or not). However, it pleases many and suits a great spread of dishes, and comes in different price brackets – simple and obvious, subtle and complex.
23. Vasse Felix Chardonnay 2023, Margaret River, Australia. Colour. Bright pale straw. Nose Elegant, yet confidently Chardonnay. A delicate fragrance of rockmelon, lemon-herb butter and Granny Smith apple, layered with subtle cucumber freshness and a gentle savoury note of avocado nori and a fine thread of limestone minerality.
Palate Light, fresh and finely composed, with a restrained creamy core. Notes of lemon curd are balanced by crisp cucumber freshness and polished acidity, carrying through to a warm, dry, gently powdery finish. Poised and expressive now, with the promise of additional weight and complexity with time in bottle.

PINOT NOIR

Pinot Noir, the original grape of Red Burgundy, in the main delivers outstanding silky texture and a fragrance of wild strawberries, cherries and autumnal leafy notes. Somewhat like Chardonnay, it very much reflects where it is grown, how it is made and matured.
Light in tannins (the harsher, drying flavours of wine), it accompanies a range of food from grilled salmon to game.
33. Eradus Estate Pinot Noir 2022, Marlborough, New Zealand
Red cherry, clove, brambles, lavender and freshly tilled earth. Cherry, warm spice, supple fruit and silky tannin with a finely structured palate.
45.00
34. Domaine Matrot, Maranges 1er Cru "La Fussières" 2016
Convivial, generous and fragrant. Open-knit flavours of wild strawberries, cherries and with a touch of violet. So juicy and red fruit-dominated, more so than previous vintages with complex herb and undergrowth notes. Earlier picking and less new oak have allowed for a more lively and delicate wine. Beautiful. Fermented with 25% whole bunches.
85.00
35. Gevrey–Chambertin 2015, 1er Cru, Domaine des Varoilles

60.00

MALBEC, MERLOT, CARMENÈRE, PINOTAGE

Merlot is the softer red grape of the traditional Bordeaux, contributing the rounder, plumier flavours in these blends. As a single, unblended varietal wine, it shows soft texture and often notes of Chocolate, plum and sometimes mint. Like Claret, it perfectly suits lamb, but when ripe and from the USA or Chile, it can take on beef and fuller game dishes.
Carmenère is an unusual, originally Southwest French grape variety, which has long passed itself off as Merlot in Chile until re-identified in recent years. Rustic and hearty, but not totally dissimilar to Merlot.
41. Pinotage 2021, Rhebokskloof Wine Estate, Paarl, South Africa
A fresh, elegant expression of idiosyncratic Pinotage grape from classic Rhebokskloof Estate. Paarl enjoys a longstanding reputation as one of
South Africa's most renowned wine producing areas, a factor of it's soils and climate. Old-established wine estate Rhebokskloof is in the heart of Paarl
and is now making exceptional wines. This Pinotage offers dark ripe fruit, subtle smoke and ash.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON, CABERNET/MERLOT, CABERNET FRANC

This splendid small, dark-berried Cabernet ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’ is very adaptable. Traditionally the Blackcurrant, firm and even tough component associated with Bordeaux (and other blends), it yields wines of firm structure, often has a dusty, minty fragrance. These blends are for red meats and cheeses.
49. The Heilan Coo Shiraz/Mataro 2022, Murray River, Victoria, Australia
Produced by the Aberdeen Wine Company. Inky Black in Colour with concentrated ripe fruits, subtle use of oaks and powerful finish. This full-bodied wine provides the ideal accompaniment to enjoy prime Scottish Beef.
36.00
51. Punta Final Reserve Cabernet Franc 2017, Renacer, Mendoza, Argentina
Fast becoming another of Argentina’s signature reds, this Cabernet Franc straddles a nice line between ripe sweet fruit and freshness which the variety classically delivers. It opens with notes of black pepper, eucalyptus and fresh mint aromas that merge with notes of vanilla and chocolate. Soft touches of French oak provide complexity and elegance. Good body and concentration with a long and persistent finish.
49.50
52. Delheim Shiraz Cabernet 2021, Simonsberg, South Africa
This wine has a youthful ruby red colour, followed by aromas of blueberries, plums, spice, liquorice and some minty undertones. Smooth and supple on the entry, with juicy red fruit flavours which follow through nicely. Medium-bodied, with generous length on the finish. For non-vegans, this wine will pair nicely with lamb stew, pepper sirloin and grilled chicken dishes.
45.00
53. Meerlust Rubicon 2021 Stellenbosch, South Africa
The 2021 Rubicon classic expression of this iconic Cape wine. Very deep, youthful colour, and intense almost purple hue. Very classic Rubicon nose with violets, ripe plum, cedar wood and intense spiciness. A typical liquorice note and stony minerality also evident on the nose. Still youthful and intense, promising further maturation potential. The palate is full bodied, structured by beautifully sleek, ripe tannins which restrain the vibrant dark fruit typical of this vintage, giving the wine an opulent texture which is kept focused by the linear acidity. The wine lingers on the palate with creamy fruit mouthfilling tannins.
85.00
55. The Cigar Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2019, Menzies Estate Vineyard, South Australia. Yalumba
‘The Cigar’ is a wine from the Yalumba Coonawarra Estate. Sibling to ‘The Menzies’, this wine is made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from The Menzies Estate vineyards. Named for the unique cigar-shaped strip of rich red terra rossa soil which defines Coona-warra’s wine region. Today, Coonawarra vineyard land is prized like a precious gem.
Yalumba The Cigar is made through traditional small lot winemaking techniques. The grapes are crushed to small static fermenters, ensuring good extraction of colour and tannin. The grapes stay on skins for around seven days, though some tanks are given extended skin con-tact before pressing. The wine is matured for 22 months in mainly French oak hogsheads and barriques; 28 per cent of them new.
The Cigar Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from Yalumba has a full nose with intense savoury blackcurrant fruit and cherry ripe highlights. The wine’s palate shows a warmer vintage and opens with cassis and ripe cherries. There are layers of plum and cherry fruit entwined with middle weight tannins, giving a lengthy savoury textured finish.
64.50

CLARET

The great favourite of Scotland, Scott called claret the ‘blood of the Auld Alliance’. The blended Cabernets, Merlots and sometimes Petit Verdot of Bordeaux, give medium-weighted, evenly balanced, well structured wines that mature well, suiting lamb in particular.
5. Burt’s House Claret 2020, Maison Sichel, Selected by Corney and Barrow
Lovely Blackcurrant and Cassis flavours together with the classic, earthy finish. GOFC. (Good Old Fashioned Claret!)
35.00
60. Chateau La Courolle 2021, Montagne St Emilion, Bordeaux
For Chateau la Couroulle, production is based almost exclusively on Merlot, with a little Cabernet Franc blended in. Harvest is done entirely by hand, and the wine is raised in French oak. It offers lovely plum and red berry fruit aromas and flavours, with notes of flowering herb, vanilla and sweet spice. It is round and smooth, full in the mouth, with a lingering finish. Versatile at table, this delightful Bordeaux can be enjoyed with a variety of foods, from red meats to roast chicken or pasta with tomato sauce.
48.00
61. Chateau Dutruch Grand Poujeaux 2016, Moulis-en-Medoc

60.00
62. Chateau La Fleur des Graves, Graves de Vayres 2019
La Fleur des Graves is the top cuvee of the property. The colour is deep and elegant. On the nose, Château La Fleur des Graves gives spicy and fruity aromas. Tannins are velvety, mature and with floral notes. A beautiful and well balanced wine.
45.00
64. Chateau La Grave a Pomerol 2018
The wine is dense in colour. The nose is delectable, richly vinous with bright, bursting plump red fruits, sweet, pure, fresh and naughty. The palate is very similar with lively almost dancing fruit flavours, silken, effortlessly ripe, full flavoured and fresh and elegant.
95.00
65. Chateau Cissac 2019, Haut Medoc Cru Bourgeois
The 2016 Chateau Cissac is the most sophisticated and impressive primeur samples we have tasted to date from this lovely estate near to the St Estephe and Pauillac borders. The bouquet is packed with notes of Morello cherry, cassis, cedar and gravelly minerals. The fruit is really polished and well delineated. There’s plenty of earthy, dark mulberry and cassis, which is framed with impressively refined tannins.
49.50
167. Chateau Trotanoy 2010, Pomerol
This spectacular wine really has considerable weight but is poised and perfectly balanced.
Full-bodied, stylistically ‘masculine’ even (as many vintages of Trotanoy tend to be) loads of earthy, foresty notes mixed with powerful black and red fruits, and a glorious deep inky/purple colour. Sweetness of fruit on the attack, balanced but totally ripe tannins in the mid palate make the wine’s power ‘easily worn’. The texture is layered, the purity of fruit impressive, and the overall balance and integration of all the wines building block flawless. Trotanoy is an expensive wine because it is highly regarded by connoisseurs the world over. Yet it rarely sells for more than half the price of Petrus – a fact worth remembering since it does (in certain vintages, 2010 being one of them!) have more than just a casual resemblance to the great Petrus itself.
395.00
168. Chateau La Fleur-Petrus 2010, Pomerol
A character similar to its cross-street neighbour, Petrus, showing sweet mulberry and intense black fruit characters, with hints of vanillin and concentrated black cherry jam. Full bodied luscious, with a weighty Merlot mid-palate and phenomenal length, the wine has plenty of fine ripe soft tannins, but the voluptuous fruit, power and overall structure balance this perfectly. Elegant, hedonistic, and compellingly rich, the ’10 is a stunning wine from La Fleur-Petrus which has one of the finest terroirs in all Pomerol.
365.00

SYRAH, SHIRAZ, GRENACHE, SPICIER REDS

Syrah has a full, brambly richness. Grenache is peppery and, often, wild berry-like. They are often blended together in the warm South of France, and produce harmonious wines such as organic Syrache below.
50. Nelson Estate Shiraz 2020, Paarl, South Africa
Nelson Estate is situated in the Agter-Paarl region of South Africa - an area well known for its high-quality wines. Alan Nelson's Shiraz is a perfect example, with silky dark fruit, rich mocha notes and a smoky finish. Award winning South African, with elegant depth and spiced fruit richness - top quality at a fantastic price.
55.00
66. Cote du Rhone 2022 Famille Perrin, Rhone, France
It’s no coincidence Famille Perrin (also owner of arguably the greatest Chateauneuf du Pape, Chateau Beaucastel) is the leading organic wine grower of the Southern Rhone Valley where they occupy the region’s best Terroirs. This has a peppery aroma, black cherry, cassis and spice flavours and the long complex finish of a fine Rhone Wine.
42.00
67. The Southerly Shiraz 2021, South East Australia
Deep garnet with purple hues, the nose shows vibrant red and black berries, violet perfume and sweet spice. The silky palate is deep and earthy with juicy black plums, sweet blueberry, shades of mocha and menthol freshness. "A Shiraz with unmistakable depth, character and freshness. AROMATIC REDS AND RIOJA

Rioja is from, mainly, the Tempranillo of Northern Spain, and its wine growers and wine makers who settled there in the 19th century heavily influenced its evolution. Riojas are also of Medium weight and soft, but are matured in American oak, which lends a certain vanilla sweetness. The name derives from the Rio Oja, the river that flows through the vineyard area. The Gamay grape is at its soft, fruity best from the village of Brouilly in the North Beaujolais.
Great with poultry and pork.
75. Brouilly Pisse-Vieille 2022, Domaine Lathuiliere, Gravallon
Brouilly - The largest Cru in Beaujolais, made from Gamay variety grape, situated around Mont Brouilly and contains within its boundaries the sub-district of Côte de Brouilly. Beautiful spiced blueberries and mulberries dance across the palate of this rounded, succulent Brouilly.

76. Dominio de Pingus Psi Peter Sisseck 2021, Ribero del Duero
This is a wine with energy and personality, a purity of expression and so much charm.
It is a beautiful, lustrous, plum-cherry in colour, with a bright fuschia rim, enticing from the outset. The nose unusually evokes fresh grape must allied to cherries, plums and fresh blueberry all complemented by pronounced mineral notes.
The palate is supple and accessible, plump and ripe, supported by rounded tannins which, with the minerality, give tremendous focus and direction.
