Melrose… not just a butcher, a baker and candlestick maker

Melrose has many claims to fame including its historic abbey, the Melrose Sevens and its unique setting beneath the beautiful Eildon Hills. But did you know that Melrose also boasts some of the finest independent shops in the country?

Sadly, not many places can still boast of having a butcher, a baker and a candlestick maker, but Melrose can, and we also have a deli, fishmonger, fruit and vegetable shop and Abbey Fine Wines with their eclectic wine, whisky and gins too. Arguably a foodie’s paradise.

Once you have purchased your food and drink goodies, there’s also a superb range of other shops which are perfect for enhancing your own home and to take back a special gift. This includes some new additions to the town’s retail shops such as Artizan the Jewellers which offers a unique range of jewellery and gifts. Next door, the newly opened gallery ‘Melrose at no.23’ showcases an amazing range of original paintings from Scottish artists, handmade furniture and other stunning gifts and crafts. Just over the road is ‘Bank House Living’ with its range of gifts, soft furnishings and furniture, as well as a full interior design service.

Further down the High Street is ‘Hendersons’ (well known for its stunning window displays) selling garden furniture, ornaments, homeware and gifts. There is also the outstanding ‘Michael Vee Interior Design’, offering specialist interiors, design and statement pieces. Other specialist gift shops include ‘Perfect Present’ (the name speaks for itself) and ‘The Crafters’ offering unique giftware from local artists, designers and crafters based in the Scottish Borders. Book lovers are also well catered for at ‘Masons of Melrose’.

Melrose is also a fashion lovers delight with a great range of shops. From ‘Sarah Thomson’ offering classic womenswear and styling advice if you need assistance for a special occasion, or just want to know that the outfit you have picked is right for you. On the opposite side of the High Street is “Twelve at Melrose’ with a stunning selection of womenswear, and like Sarah Thomson, stocks clothes that are distinctive and unique. Handily located next door is ‘Hogarths’, where you will find a great selection of luxury designer scarves and accessories to finish your outfit, as well as a wonderful range of Scottish products, they also feature a range of up and coming designers. All well worth a visit.

For the more active, ‘Hardies Bikes’ offer a wide range of bikes and accessories. Close by, the ‘National Trust’ have a wonderful shop at Priorwood Gardens which is located next to Melrose Abbey. If you need a rest after all your shopping, ‘Simply Delicious’ is renowned for its ice-cream and tablet, as well as being somewhere to stop for a cup of coffee and even more gift shopping.

All this shopping can make you hungry, so why not pop in to either Burts or the Townhouse hotels, where you’ll find a great range of award winning food at both lunchtime and in the evening.

We hope you will agree with us that the beautiful and historic town of Melrose is the perfect place to shop. Whether you are coming for a day trip from Edinburgh on the train, or staying longer, we’re sure you’ll find something distinctive to take back with you as well as enjoying a unique shopping experience.
