TweedStart – Creating a community of young anglers
Posted on 09 April 2024
The Tweed Foundation has just unveiled its TweedStart Ambassadors Programme, an exciting initiative aimed at fostering the next generation of anglers across the Tweed catchment area.
TweedStart is the Tweed Foundation’s angling initiative aimed at getting people of all ages participating in natural history and game angling throughout the Tweed catchment. It particularly focusses on developing young anglers, encouraging children to take an interest in the ecology of the River Tweed and making them aware of the importance of maintaining a healthy river system for fishing.
The programme offers young anglers a comprehensive pathway for learning and development, empowering them to become advocates who inspire their peers to explore the positive benefits of angling and become stewards of our rivers and fisheries.
Launched at Kailzie Trout Farm near Peebles, TweedStart events will be taking part across the region throughout the year, including at Earlston, Kelso, Selkirk and Coldstream during the Easter holidays.

Ben McCallum, Tweed Foundation Education Officer and Project Lead, said:
“This initiative represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to empower the next generation of anglers and ensure the sustainable future of fishing on the River Tweed.
We foresee these Ambassadors emerging as advocates for youth not only within the Scottish Borders & North Northumberland as we extend the programme”.
Young Ambassadors will receive:
- Rod, reel, and line to kickstart your fishing journey.
- Life vests and waders for safety and comfort on the water.
- Plus, a plethora of ancillary items.
Massive thanks to the generous donations from Tweed Angling Clubs, FishPal and Glasgow Angling Centre for their support.
