The Black Hill of Earlston

For views of the Borders which are truly epic, walkers will love Black Hill near Earlston.

The incline of this rewarding walk is slow even up to the summit but the sweeping panoramic views of the Southern Uplands and the Eildons from its trig point are incredible.

Of course, the most famous hills in the central Borders are the iconic Eildon Hills, attracting thousands and thousands of walkers each year. But another summit which is overlooked is neighbouring Black Hill, located southeast of Earlston and topped by an iron age fort.

Hiding in plain sight, this lesser-known Borders hill will reward you with stunning views of the Southern Uplands, Scott Country and of course the aforementioned Eildon Hills.

Even though the summit of Black Hill is 314 metres above sea level, the walk is best described as being just moderately difficult, especially when ascended from the east side which avoids its steepest aspects.

Start/finish:

The B63561 south of Earlston, park in lay-by and please don’t block the gate.

Start and finish at Cowdenknowes Mains, walk from the foot of the hill on the east side and reach the summit by east slopes. The route is signposted, and you return using same route.
